Sod Roller A sod roller is a heavy, water- or sand-filled cylinder used to flatten soil before laying turf and to press newly installed sod into the ground, eliminating air pockets and ensuring vital root-to-soil contact. It promotes faster root establishment, creates a smooth, even surface, and helps mend uneven ground caused by frost or moles. When to Use a Sod Roller Immediately After Installation: Once all sod pieces are laid, roll the entire area to establish, level, and remove air pockets. Before Sodding: Use a roller on the prepared soil (tilled and fertilized) to create a firm, smooth, and level surface. Repairing Damage: A heavy roller can compress frost heaves, molehills, and uneven areas in established lawns.
