Directional Boring Locator In horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a directional boring locator refers to both the specialized electronic system used to track the drill head and the skilled technician who operates it. These systems act as the "eyes" of the underground operation, providing real-time data on the drill's depth, pitch, and orientation to avoid existing utilities. How the Locating System Works A standard HDD locating system consists of three primary components: Transmitter (Sonde): A battery-powered beacon housed in the drill head that emits a continuous electromagnetic signal. Receiver: A handheld unit used by the locator on the surface to pick up the transmitter's signal and calculate the drill's exact position. Remote Display: A screen mounted on the drill rig that mirrors the receiver's data, allowing the drill operator to make steering adjustments immediately.
